Helping Children Deal with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Yesterday, I saw a little girl that survived the earthquake in Haiti.  One year later after the earthquake, she is just beginning to show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Did you know that most people who experience trauma do not show signs of PTSD until a year later? This is ironic, since most of the aid, media attention, and charity work focuses on getting help to people immediately after a disaster.  So when signs of emotional distress pop up a year later, family members don’t often suspect PTSD.  If you or someone you love has experienced trauma of any sort, visit the National Child Traumatic Stress Network website.
